Our agency was engaged with the ultimate objective of ending the influence of a destructive sect over the client’s daughter. The assignment involved collecting intelligence on the subjects of interest, conducting analytical assessment of the gathered information, identifying potential entry points for further operational work, and documenting compromising or legally relevant evidence.
During the initial stage of the investigation, we examined the sect leader, her close associates, and their activities within the organization. It quickly became clear that the group operated primarily through popular online platforms — including YouTube channels, Telegram communities, and other social media accounts.
Without going into the full scope of the investigative work performed, the key results were as follows:
An analysis of the sect leader’s “predictions,” widely promoted within the group’s content, unsurprisingly revealed no evidence of any extraordinary abilities. In practice, these predictions consisted of subjective interpretations of geopolitical developments presented as prophetic insight.
A review of the group’s publicly available materials also revealed numerous videos of mystical rituals — such as alleged “curse removal” ceremonies — conducted in front of icons depicting Orthodox Christian saints. In some cases, the videos included symbols associated with the extremist organization known as the “International Satanist Movement,” which was officially banned in the Russian Federation on July 23, 2025 (notably the inverted pentagram).
As a result, these publicly available materials formally contained elements that could constitute administrative offenses under Russian law. However, while these findings were noteworthy, they were unlikely on their own to significantly weaken the sect’s influence over committed followers.
A more revealing picture emerged from the analysis of the subject’s activity on Telegram. Our investigators identified more than 3,000 messages posted by the subject in public Telegram groups. A detailed review of these communications revealed a number of statements that may contain elements of administrative or criminal offenses under Russian legislation related to extremist activity.
Article 282(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation establishes criminal liability for actions aimed at inciting hatred or hostility, including the justification or promotion of violence or threats of violence. The offense is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years.
The same analytical work was then extended to the sect leader’s immediate circle — including her son and husband. Our review indicated that the son likely holds nationalist views. Several comments posted by him in unrelated public chats revealed clear signs of far-right ideological positions. Among these messages, we identified a number of statements that could potentially constitute offenses under Russian legislation relating to extremist activity.
Based on the results of the investigation, our agency prepared recommendations for further action. These included the possible use of the collected information in cooperation with law enforcement authorities in order to document potential criminal activity involving members of the family within the framework of the sect’s operations.
Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation establishes liability for organizing, recruiting for, or participating in the activities of an organization recognized by a court as extremist and banned. The maximum penalty under this provision is up to ten years of imprisonment.
At the same time, our work represented only the first stage of a much broader process. The ultimate objective is the individual’s complete disengagement from the sect — breaking the psychological dependence, replacing the surrounding social circle, and gradually shifting interests and perspectives.
Achieving this requires months of careful and methodical work — both in relation to the sect itself and with the client’s daughter. It is entirely possible that in the near future she may “coincidentally” encounter new acquaintances who will gradually redirect her attention and involve her in different activities.
