Information gathering

Information gathering is a sought-after group of services both among managers of small and medium-sized businesses and among private individuals who turn to a private detective. In the stated formulation (information gathering), the content of the service can be interpreted very broadly, but in practice and in accordance with the law “On Private Detective and Security Activities in the Russian Federation”, several directions and grounds for gathering information are distinguished.

Thus, in accordance with Article 3 of the above-mentioned Law of the Russian Federation, a private detective is allowed to provide the following types of services for investigative purposes.

  1. gathering information on civil cases on a contractual basis with participants in the process;
  2. market research, information gathering for business negotiations, identification of insolvent or unreliable business partners;
  3. establishing circumstances of unlawful use in entrepreneurial activities of trademarks and names, unfair competition, as well as disclosure of information constituting a commercial secret;
  4. clarification of biographical and other personality-characterizing data about certain citizens when concluding employment and other contracts;
  5. search for missing persons;
  6. search for property lost by citizens or enterprises, institutions, organizations;
  7. gathering information on criminal cases on a contractual basis with participants in the process;
  8. search for a person who is a debtor according to an enforcement document, their property, as well as the search for a child according to an enforcement document, on a contractual basis with the claimant.

As can be seen, 4 out of 8 main types of services provided by the law are related to information gathering. Moreover, the remaining 4, which were not separately highlighted, are also related to information gathering, but in their case, it is not the ultimate goal of the activity, but only its means.

Thus, one way or another, information gathering is present during the conduct of any kind of investigative actions, and in some cases is their goal and main purpose.
